Have a look for some of the other chips on the board; there should be
two or three with the same name (SiS, UMC, OPTi...).

There are known problems with some UMC chipsets and recent graphics
cards; the high DMA channels seem to be blocked. I have this problem
with my Soundblaster 16 and a Hercules Dynamite, but it can apply to
other models. My only solution was to force the 16-bit DMA to share the
8-bit DMA channel. IIRC, however, you can't do this with a PAS.

Strangely (or not), my Adaptec 1542C has no problems using DMA 5, since
it has its own DMA controller; soundcards are passive DMA (using the
motherboard DMA controller). Sadly, UMC's controller isn't up to the
job.
