Yup. The whole kernel architecture is different !

I can't agree with with that. The issue is

'what is the most cost effective way of doing a job ?'.

If for a job with some level of memory requirement, it can be done within
the required time by spending x on RAM, or y on software that makes better
use of a smaller amount of RAM, I can see justification.

If a 30 quid add on to the OS buys you the same performance lift as say
the equivalent of 4 meg of extra RAM, it's got to be a good technology.

Apart from that, on any VM system,if you can compress data before swapping,
that gets you less disk IO => more speed + more VM space.

It's got to be a good thing, and the sooner it becomes a standard OS
feature the better.

I'm not discounting the benefit of good hardware, but even on this P133
with 32 meg of RAM and 4 gig of 7200 RPM SCSI drive, less swap disk access
would be good. Think a machine that big never swaps ? Think again :) !
People wouldn't buy them that big if they didn't have programs to exercise
them !

The availability of these RAM compressing apps has to be one of the few
areas where crap-Windows can beat Warp or NT.

How could RAM or swap compressing software ever be a disadvantage ?

After all, it ought not to do any compressing until the RAM is so full
that the options are compressing or disk IO.
