We tried both with and without the DAT drive. I should mention that he
has been using the HDD for around 7 months as part of a BBS setup. In that
time its only been turned of around 5 or 6 times (once was the previous
day to unplug the DAT drive). The drive current has about 3.5 gig of data
of which the latest 300 meg was not backed up. He has the other 3.2 on DAT.
The spec of the machine is a 486dx-50, 32 meg of RAM, ET4000, NE2000 NIC,
2 x 4 gig Grand Prix drive, 1.44 FDD, External DAT drive, 2 x External
CD-ROM jukeboxes. Its a tower case with a 230 watt PSU with three fans
(two chassis, 1 CPU). The External DAT, CD-ROM jukeboxes and the monitor
have their own power supply with is not from the case.
This leads me to believe that there is a problem with the HDD because
everything is still running fine. We tried the drive on a seperate machine,
and the SCSI LED lit up to indicate access on bootup, the was a second of
wurring sound and then nothing. I have heard of cases where HDD motor
can get stuck in a certain position so that it cannot spin up.
