Because the page you've requested isn't available on that server?
That'll be fifty guineas, please.

Oh, OK.... :-)

The dreaded "404" means, as the message implies, that the server you're
talking to wasn't able to locate the page you asked it for. There's a
lot of possible reasons for it, but some likely ones are:

  * You made a mistake in typing the URL.
  * The author of the page, from which you're linking, made a mistake.
  * The target page name/location has changed since the reference was written.
  * The target page has been removed.
  * The base or target page has been moved and relative links weren't updated.
  * The server is having problems, and has simply "lost its place"
(not as uncommon as one might hope...)
  * A script "call" within the base page is wrong, or a piece of
    supporting software has moved/vanished/not-been-installed...
"imagemap" is a favourite (he said, bitterly, having spent a
couple of *weeks* trying to get somebody to install it!!)

... and so forth. That should serve to give you a flavour of what might
be happening.
