You asked for it... :)

The install went OK, but I was unable to get DIS (2.16d) to find
the modem, running in either a DOS box or DOS. The video files
included on the CD would not play, instead producing an error.
Win95 made the most godawful mess of my Program Manager groups,
stuffing them all on the Start button. Sound would not work, no
matter how much I twiddled with the settings.

My PC is a standard clone dx2/66 w/16Mb ram. Sound card is SB
clone (Orchid Sound Producer Pro). COM ports at default port and
IRQ settings. I have no problems with DOS6.22/W4WG3.11.

After some time, I reformatted my HDD and restored my backups.
Fortunately, I backed up before installing '95.

ISTR some discussion about people having trouble when they
de-installed '95 and went back to 3.11 about corrupt swapfiles,
Windows hanging, etc. I have not had this problem on my home
machine but the one at work did exactly this, complaining that
the swapfile was corrupt, then constantly accessing the hard
disc. Windows would not start at all, and the 3 fingered salute
was ignored. Big red switch time. Grr. Thanks Mr Gates.

Despite a lot of pissing about with win.ini and system.ini
(including reinstalling the Win.cln and System.cln files and
deleting 386spart.par), I could not cure the problem. Trying to
reinstall Windows made no difference. As soon as Setup tried to
start Windows, the problem would reappear.

In the end, I installed Windows into a different directory and
copied over all the .com, .exe and .ini files to the original
Windows directory. This got me up and running again.

I don't think I'll be trying '95 again in a hurry.
