If you like red wine, like scenery, and really want to make this just a day trip, you want to take 101. Highway 1 is gorgeous, and Hearst Castle is very much worth seeing, but this is way too slow for your day trip drive. I-5 is unbelievably straight and boring, very possibly the most boring highway in the USA. The San Luis Obispo / Paso Robles area is the halfway point on your trip and has many great possibilities. I'll second the recommendation for Villa Creek in Paso Robles, but even better might be McPhee's Grill in Templeton, just a few miles south of Paso Robles (www.mcphees.com). Get a glass of local Zinfandel as your introduction to California wine. Michael
