It's 28 Dec 96 23:38, We'll return to hart@opera.iinet.net.au and All's discussion of Dialix Flat Rate is poor value. ha> k = 1000 ha> K = 1024 ha> m = 1000000 ha> M = 1048576 ha> g = 1000000000 ha> G = 1073741824 Maybe, though I'm not 100% sure on these, as 'm' could get confused with "milli" (and we don't want our Ethernets to run at 0.01 bits / sec!!! ;) ). I have seen this done for k and K though. I usually figure that memory uses the k = 1024 convention, data rates used the k = 1000 (etc) convention. Disk space is a littke unclear, depends on why you talk to! (though I prefer the k = 1024 here myself, as it's data storage). :-) In short, if you're talking about storage capacity (RAM, disk, tape, etc), I assume k = 1024, for anything else (including transmission rates), k = 1000... ha> b = bits ha> B = bytes That's a common convention, which I use myself. :) ha> Thus: ha> 64kb is 64000 bits ha> 64Kb is 65536 bits ha> 64kB is 64000 bytes ha> 64KB is 65536 bytes That's one way to work. :-) However, as I said, with the 'm' and 'M', you can run into grief in some fields, if you use this approach. ;) ...
