If it's any consolation, there's some evidence that B.A. now recognizes
the problem - I spoke with our customer rep the other day, and was told
that there are two other Maryland ISPs with SLC96s who're having the same
problem you're having.

It was also clear from that conversation that B.A. considers the solution
to this problem to be ISDN. They have no plans to open the audio bandpass
beyond what's required for competent voice & fax transmission, and if one
wants higher speeds, ISDN's the way to go. I can see their point and am
inclined to agree - even without the SLC96 problem, modem connections are
problematic anyway, when it rains, or is too hot outside, or too cold, or
Murphy just feels like being on a rampage. Digital connections don't seem
to have these problems, and while they're more expensive, they're
available & they do work really well.

Meanwhile I guess I'm glad we got copper - I tried to get fiber here &
failed last summer - for once, dumb luck worked in my favor. We added 250
lines, and were told that that was about all we were going to be able to
get in this location. BA's trying to encourage us to grow via ISDN by
adding 23 channels at a time by getting PRI's, thus using only 2 of our
scarce copper pairs per PRI. Doing it that way turns out to be relatively
cheap in terms of B.A. charges (though the hardware isn't, yet ...).
