In fact, it's not Digex's problem. Not at all. What a 28.8 modem is doing is almost like trying to drive your car (6'wide) through a 6'-1" concrete tunnel. It can be done, but don't let the mirors stick out too far, and make sure that the tunnel is REALLY 6'-1". Remember that first of all, the dial-in lines are delivered to Digex as a "pots" line on two wires (Plain Old Telephone Service). Any digital transmission that carries the call is at the whim & mercy of the telco, be it BA, C&P (for some of us :-)), NyNex, etc. There is equipment that will take a digital line (usually at a ds1 rate), and run the "analog" bit streams into DSP modems, then into a software terminal server, and that out an ethernet, but those boxes are usually more expensive than seperate boxes with interconnections. Secondly, many people's homes are connected to SLC's if they are a good distance from the wire center. That is, of course, not under Digex's control. Third, the digital spans between wire centers can do all sorts of things to the bit stream. Ever seen lots of "}"s on a 1200bps connection (I'm, showing my age)? That's often a sync slip on a span line, not a modem problem. A ds1 rate line set for ANI instead of B8ZS will do wonders to some things, although not usually voice calls. Give credit where credit is due, if Digex connects 28.8 modems to the lines, but the lines refuse to carry the data, go after the carrier, not the provider. For a good discussion of SLC's, check out comp.dcom.telecom, comp.dcom. telecom.tech, and alt.dcom.telecom.
