Oberon may be obtained via anonymous ftp from neptune.inf.ethz.ch (129.132.101.33) for the machines listed below. All implementations except MacOberon contain the Oberon-2 language extensions as described e.g. in /Oberon/Docu/Oberon2.Differences.ps.Z . Please see the various "readme" files for further documentation. implementation: directory company, machine, cpu, OS, graphics library DECoberon: /Oberon/DECstation Dec, DECstation, MIPS R2000, Ultrix, X11 MacOberon: /Oberon/MacII Apple, Macintosh, MC 68020, MacOS, QuickDraw POWERoberon: /Oberon/RS6000 IBM, POWERstation, RS/6000, AIX, X11 SPARCoberon: /Oberon/SPARC/Oberon.2.2 Sun, SPARCstation, SPARC, SunOS 4.1.1, X11 or pixrect The primary source for documentation about the Oberon system is: M. Reiser, The Oberon System, User Guide and Programmer's Manual Addison-Wesley, 1991, ISBN 0-201-54422-9 (Note that hardware specific details like screen bitmap organization or timer resolution may differ between implementations). Additional documentation is available as compressed postscript files in /Oberon/Docu . Oberon is both, a programming language and a programming system designed by N. Wirth and J. Gutknecht at ETH Zurich. The language Oberon evolved from Modula-2 with some modifications: - definition and implementation merged into one document - type extension (for object-oriented programming) - support for runtime type tests - type inclusion for numeric types - string operations - enumerations and subranges dropped - Oberon-2: type-bound procedures, read-only export, open arrays Compilers - generate native code - speed: about 1000 lines per sec on a SPARCstation 1 - no separate linking step required System - single-process multi tasking - garbage collection - multiple module entry points (commands) - runtime linking - tiled windows - texts as built-in abstract data type - extensible tools for text and graphics editing Oberon has been used for education, personal computing, and program development at ETH Zurich for more than three years now.
