SOLAR TERRESTRIAL PREDICTIONS WORKSHOP
--------------------------------------
May 18 - 22, 1992
Ottawa, Canada
The Solar Terrestrial Environment - is it our largest environmental concern?
Increasingly, technologies are suffering the effects of solar-terrestrial
phenomena, such as magnetic storms. Advancing our capabilities for
predicting these phenomena is the major focus of this Workshop, the fourth
in a series of Workshops organized through the International Ursigram and
World Day Service (IUWDS). IUWDS, a permanent service of URSI, IAU, and
IUGG, promotes and coordinates the rapid transmission of solar-terrestrial
data to Regional warning Centres throughout the world.
At this Workshop, presentations of new ideas, reviews, and problems in
the following topics will be made through formal papers, panel discussions
and Working Groups.
* Solar activity, forecasts and impacts on geospace and geophysical
activities.
* Ionospheric events: their predictability and impacts.
* Geomagnetic activity: forecasts, correlations with solar
phenomena, impacts.
* Evaluation of forecasts.
* User requirements for solar-terrestrial predictions.
* Review of the present solar maximum.
Who should attend?
* Researchers in the field of Solar-Terrestrial Physics.
* Forecasters of the Solar-Terrestrial Environment.
* Users of Forecasts, including:
- Exploration Geophysicists.
- HF and VHF Radio Communicators.
- Operators of Electric Power Utilities and Pipelines.
- Satellite and other Spacecraft Operators.
- GPS Surveyors.
Organization of the Workshop
This Solar-Terrestrial Predictions Workshop is being organized by the
Ottawa Associate Regional Warning Centre (ARWC), part of the Geological
Survey of Canada, with collaboration from the Communications Research
Centre, Ottawa, and the Department of Earth Sciences of Carleton University.
The Workshop will be held at the Conference Centre of Carleton
University in Ottawa. Accommodation for most participants will be
available in a new university residence located nearby. The university is
in a beautiful location between the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal,
close to the amenities of Canada's capital city.
Intending participants should note that the American Geophysical Union
(AGU) will be holding its Spring Meeting, jointly with the Canadian
Geophysical Union (CGU), in Montreal during the week prior to the Workshop.
Montreal is only a two-hour drive from Ottawa, so while you are travelling
away from home, consider taking in all or part of the AGU/CGU Meeting as
well as the Solar-Terrestrial Predictions Workshop.
