From: "ATDECC::LARNER" <larner%atdecc.decnet@consrt.rockwell.com> Date: 24 May 91 11:29:00 PST Subject: SLIP Problem / Header Compression > I'm having problems getting a SLIP connection to work properly between two > PC's. ... Looks like I found the answer to my own problem. Turns out that I obtained a sample autoexec.net file from another ham. He had his callsign at the end of the attach command (for some reason!?). Following the advice for newcomers in documents I have, I decided to leave well enough alone in the autoexec.net file, and just did a global replace of his call with my own. Now it turns out that in his case putting his callsign there was benign. However, my call (wv9z) contains a 'v' which turns on Van Jacobson compression, and this appears to be the cause of the problem - if I put a single v at the end of the command to turn this compression on, I get the same 'hanging behavior - apparently this is broken code? Life is now good again - FTP now works! Thanks to all those that tried to help though! Krep Needork! Dan Larner Allen-Bradley Co., 1201 S. The network we're connected to, VERNET (off SURANET) would like for me to provide my own BIND services to the Internet. At the moment, they have agreed to provide the BIND server for me, but I would like to get self-sufficent ASAP. Adding or changing hosts now requires co-ordination with the VERNET sysop, and he's busy enough with his network and campus work. So, if anyone knows of a PC based BIND, I have a 'door stop' I can dedicate to the task. Public domain or shareware prefered, as I expect to get t he SUN by fall. Now NNTP. I need a PC based NNTP SERVER program. I know KA9Q NOS has a NNTP client, but VERNET is not able to provide me access to their University NNTP server, but they are willing to provide a feed to a server at my site. Or, alternately, if someone knows of an NNTP server on or near VERNET/SURANET that wouldn't mind allowing my NOS client to pull a few streams. Thanks all! Jim De Arras ----
