Adobe Acrobat (full version), Distiller, and PS files

I bought Adobe acrobat so I can easily convert files into PDF format.

Much to my surprise, Distiller "took over" the *.ps file type, and wants to
distill every PS file that I click on, converting it into a PDF. I have a
nice PS viewer and have no interest in such automated conversion.

Even more annoying, I can't find the "ps" extension listed anywhere among
the various filetypes (accessible via explorer / view / options /
filetypes). I'm sure this is being controlled somewhere in the registry
(note to Adobe: why don't you make this user controllable?).

So my question:

How do I turn this "option" OFF, so that I can return to using
Ghostscript to view PDF, and still be able to distill these files if I want
to?

Thanks!

Paul:

Using the Windows Explorer, locate any *.ps file.

While holding down the shift key, RIGHT mouse click
on the *.ps file listing.

You will get a dialog box showing "Open With".

Left Click on the "Open With".

An "Open With" dialog box opens.

Navigate to your postscript viewer, and highlight it.

Insure that the "Always use this program to open this
type of file" check box is checked.

You have now changed the type of viewer used to
open the postscript file. This will work with
any file listed in windows.

HTH.

Hi Paul!

There's another alternative!
You can open in the explorer the menu VIEW|Options. Here you can choose
File Types. There you have information on all file associations. Look
for *.ps and you can edit this type. You have complete control over the
pop-up menu that you get with the right mouse key. You can add, delete
or modify functionality of this menu and even the default choice, that
means when you dubbel-click on a file.

Good luck!

/Wolfgang

Keith,

Thanks, that works. To the second respondent, who suggested "tools / view /
filetypes", that does not work, at least in Windows 98. Somehow, Acrobat
leave the "postscript" filetype entry, but "takes over" the "*.ps"
extension, leaving "*.eps" for ghostscript. If I attempt to add "*.ps",
explorer tells me "another program is already using that extension". As I
said before, kind of odd behavior.

In an ideal world, double clicking on a *.ps extension would pop up a dialog
box, "view postscript", "Distill to PDF", "Cancel".

In an ideal world, we wouldn't be using operating systems designed for the
computer illiterate either. But since the world isn't so ideal and since
there's a lot of money to be made catering to the computationally
challenged, we get what we get. Sigh.

But ... there are little games you can play with the Send To folder. You
could either put shortcuts to the apps you want or appropriate BAT files
there. That'd give you the option of rightclicking a file, picking Send to,
then choosing the app you want to deal with the file.

If I recall correctly, the default behavior of having an app shortcut in the
file is the same as invoking the app on the command line with the file
you've rightclicked passed to it as the first commandline param.
