The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has rekindled : the fire for the Duraleigh Connector Road Project which would connect : Duraleigh road in west Raleigh with I-40. The alternate they have proposed : would rip a 300 ft. right-of-way through recently donated land to Umstead : State Park, destroying a whole section of Richland Creek bottomland in its : path. This is a real hoot. We have here a road that needs to be built to relieve traffic congestion. It is passing through what the tree-hugging, liberal weenies claim is almost sacred land - land not to be disturbed by mankind. Yet the pin-heads have little touch with reality. The land that comprises Umstead State Park was (not that long ago) farm land that was strip cleared then abandoned by agriculture. But now big, bad business wants to build a road. Good. That land was once productive and, with a road, it will once again regain some of its productivity. We're not talking natural wilderness here folks. Learn that and your life will be much more settled. : In order to save Umstead State Park, Schenck Forest, and one of the last : remaining undisturbed green spaces close to the city, we urge you to : write... Next thing you know these same folks will insist that we do not touch Falls Lake since it is a natural habitat. IT'S A MAN-MADE LAKE, YOU MORONS!!! Just like it's a man-made forest. Mankind built it and we can just as easily tear it down (or drain it.) Steve Crisp
