DUKE JAZZ SERIES KICKS OFF WITH SEPT. 23 PERFORMANCE

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke Jazz Series, a yearly highlight
among the offerings of Duke University's music department, will
feature saxophonist and composer Sam Newsome as this year's premier
performer in the fall 1994 presentations. Newsome and the Duke
Jazz Ensemble will perform Friday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. in Baldwin
Auditorium, East Campus.
The series honors tenor saxophone legend Sonny Rollins and
is headed by Paul Jeffrey, director of jazz studies at Duke.
Newsome has played with legendary trumpeter Donald Byrd, had
his recording "Sam I Am" on The New York Times top 10 list of jazz
recordings for 1992, participated in the first live performance of
a jazz group on Black Entertainment Television and is a member of
the Terence Blanchard Quintet.
Russian trumpeter Valery Ponomarev will perform Saturday,
Oct. 1, at 8 p.m. in Baldwin Auditorium. Ponomarev has worked with
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and
was featured soloist in the Charlie Parker in Paris Festival. He
is recently back from Russia where he went after a 17-year absence
to participate in the First International Jazz Festival in Moscow.
On Friday, Oct 28, at 8 p.m., alto and tenor saxophonist
Adam Brenner will perform in the Nelson Music Room, East Campus.
Brenner studied saxophone and arranging under Jeffrey at Rutgers
University. He also was a member of the Lionel Hampton Big Band,
the George Coleman Octet and the Vernel Fournier Quintet. He has
played with Mel Torme and Wynton Marsalis and currently has his own
quartet.
Jamaican-born trumpeter Dizzy Reece, who will play on
Saturday, Nov. 19, at 8 p.m., Baldwin Auditorium, has performed
with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman and John
Coltrane. Reece, a prolific composer, arranger and orchestrator,
has performed internationally and has been called one of the very
few great musical trumpet players in the world today.
Jazz singer Jackie Paris can be heard Saturday, Dec. 3, at
8 p.m. in Baldwin Auditorium. Paris introduced the first vocal
recording of Thelonious Monk's classic standard "'Round Midnight."
Jazz critic Leonard Feather calls Paris "one of the handful of male
singers to come to prominence who has retained the true jazz
sound." Paris has toured with the Charlie Parker Quintet and
performed with Charlie Mingus, who wrote songs for Paris, one of
his favorite singers.
Featured as well at each performance will be the Duke Jazz
Ensemble under Jeffrey's direction.
Sonny Rollins, in whose honor this year's series is
dedicated, received a Grammy nomination for his score for the film
"Alfie." Often called "the greatest living tenor saxophonist,"
Rollins is known as one of the most consistently innovative artists
in modern music, integrating styles from every corner of jazz:
bebop, romantic balladry, dance rhythms and melodic and harmonic
inventions.
Tickets -- $10 for general admission and $7 for students --
are available through Page Box Office, (919) 684-4444 or Ticket
Master, (919) 834-4000. Tickets are also available at the door on
the evening of the performance.
Trans World Airlines is sponsoring the series with Duke's
Department of Music and Jazz Studies Program. Additional sponsors
include the Durham Hilton, Elkins Chrysler-Plymouth, CD Superstore,
Durham Parks and Recreation, Raleigh Parks and Recreation, Yamaha
International Corp., WNND-FM 103.9, WSHA-FM 88.9, WUNC-FM 91.5,
