FORMER WRAL ANCHOR TO BE HONORED AT DUKE EYE CENTER FUND-RAISER
DURHAM, N.C. -- Long-time North Carolina broadcaster Charlie
Gaddy will be in the spotlight at the 1994 Reach for Sight event
on Nov. 12 when he is honored as the 1994 Person of Vision award
recipient.
This year's Reach for Sight black-tie dinner, dubbed "Set
Sail to See and Celebrate," will include a reception, dinner,
dance, and live and silent auctions of art, antiques, vacations
and other items. The event will be held at the Durham OMNI Hotel
beginning at 6 p.m. on Nov. 12.
Proceeds from Reach for Sight, an annual fund-raiser
benefitting the Duke Eye Center, will support the expansion the
center's Low Vision Rehabilitation Service to help improve the
quality of life for those with irreversible eye problems,
organizers said.
"We focus on treating and curing eye problems, but we also
recognize the great need for developing more services for those
with permanent vision impairment," said Dr. David Epstein,
chairman of ophthalmology at Duke. "There are a number of new
technologies that can help improve the lives of the visually
impaired and make daily tasks easier for them. This year's Reach
for Sight is dedicated to expanding opportunities at Duke for
those patients."
In previous years, Reach for Sight has helped underwrite the
Duke Eye Center's research into the causes and treatment of
glaucoma and other eye diseases affecting the retina and cornea,
as well as children's eye ailments.
Gaddy, recently retired news anchor at WRAL-TV in Raleigh,
will be recognized for his contributions to the lives of people
in the Triangle and other parts of North Carolina during his 24-
year broadcasting career. His support of Reach for Sight,
including serving as master of ceremonies for several years, has
played a significant role in the event's success the past 10
years, Epstein said.
During the evening, rare and limited edition art, including
a number of works by Greensboro watercolorist William Mangum,
will be on display as part of the inventory of items up for
auction. Mangum, whose son was successfully treated at the Duke
Eye Center, is offering an original watercolor of the North
Carolina coast, "Set Sail for Sea," as well as prints of the
painting at the sale.
-----
Individual tickets for the event are $100 per person, or
$1,000 per table for a corporate sponsorship. For more
information, call (919) 684-6593 or (800) 422-1575, extension
