In article <CLAUDE.92Sep14152928@tokyo.trc.mew.mei.co.jp> claude@trc.mew.mei.co.jp (Claude Huss) writes: |Kenji> It's very sad to find out that only few domains in Japan are |Kenji> read-write accessible to non-fj newsgroups. And it's really disgusting |Kenji> that very very few Japanese domains are paying money for overseas |Kenji> email traffic. I urge those domain to subscribe international mail |Kenji> service such as InetClub or UUNET ASAP; otherwise they do a very |Kenji> harmful thing to our Internet society. |YES.... However, the main problem is university in Japan is **Terribly** |underfunded... It's cheaper and easier to get basic research from the |US or Europe. Don't forget that both Junet and Wide-net were |started not from governamental agencies, but from some brave professors. |I really admire them.... I respect Prof. Jun Murai and other founders of WIDE/TISN/JAIN and JUNET projects too. They are getting their money mostly from non-governmental organizations so that they keep themselves free from gov't policies. But what I'm saying is something different - piggying-back to an academic link to perform not-exactly-academic communication WITHOUT paying money is indeed UNFAIR. I see many organizations who are violating the usage rule of Japan-US academic link - the link is only for academic and WIDE-supporting organizations (such as mei.co.jp and astem.or.jp). I insist that those who want to join and support Internet culture MUST have international reachablity by their own money - since it's technically very expensive and time-consuming to make international email UNreachable. Just paying some ten-thousand-yen bills to InetClub or subscribing UUNET will solve this problem peacefully. |In my opinion this system is mutually perverse: US taxpayers paying |billions of dollars in basic research to Japanese corporates use it |in their products and Japanese universities condemned to be ethernal |workforce "repositories" to Japanese companies. Their have to be some kind of borderless economy and agreements between nations on the Internet - otherwise somebody will pay too much and somebody will pay too less. // Kenji
