Because the likely result is becoming more and more clear and the
republicans are starting to realize they're fighting a losing battle.

I also suspect it's compensation for the realization that their
candidates really aren't very desirable. Bush for the obvious reasons,
and now Cheney's health has predictably failed.

And there are other serious flaws such as Bush's three arrests which
may have been illegally ommitted from his election paperwork, and
Cheney's switch of residency from Texas to Wyoming which may not have
been done properly so would be a clear constitutional violation.

They may not like Gore for some relatively minor ideological
differences, but there are beginning to be more and more reasons to
believe that this Bush/Cheney ticket is no good for the nation's
interests once you put those interests above their party's interests.

Anyhow, there's often a tendency to rally around the candidate before
dumping them.
