They didn't care enough to mention it in the constitution. My best
guess is that they thought that further qualifications for senator
were to be left to the state.

At any rate it's happened before, Robert F Kennedy comes to mind, and
I don't remember anyone challenging it. Perhaps they should have, but
it's not like it's the first time it's come up.

But since the requirement, vis a vis President/VP, is specifically
mentioned twice in the US Constitution and no similar mention for
senator one has to conclude any comparison is metaphorical at best,
and apples and oranges at worst.

The important distinction is that a senator is qualified and voted on
within a state (previously by their legislatures, now by popular vote)
so a state has ample opportunity to raise and execute on residency
issues, even extra-legal (e.g., the voters could have shown their
final disapproval by not voting for Hillary), while a federal
election, specifically president/vp, is not so easily under the
control of any one state so rules had to be set down.

>From the standpoint of representing state's interests, and balance
>between the states, it's much easier to see Dick Cheney as a Wyominger
>(or whatever) than Hillary Clinton as a New Yorker.

Whatever that means...I think the important queston was who could
represent the people of New York better in the Senate, Rick Lazio or
Hillary Clinton. Clearly and unambiguously the voters of New York said
Hillary.

In contrast, Cheney had to change his residency from Texas to Wyoming
at the last minute to fulfill a constitutional requirement for
president/vp.

Whether Cheney can better represent Wyoming is completely irrelevant
since he's running for VP, not Senator from Wyoming.

>Also, a senator is
>supposed to represent the interests of a specific state, and a
>vice-president is not. (Of course, they were dumb enough to vote her in,
>so...)

Dumb enough? I guess we're all lucky no one died and made you king,
always nice when someone tries to underscore their mere disagreement
by resorting to insults.

Lazio was a very weak candidate pulled out only when Giuliani dropped
out due to his personal and health problems.

It's not "dumb" that the voters of NY voted for Hillary, she was the
more attractive candidate for representing their interests.
