Shouldn't the original text always be the reference? Shouldn't each translator
study it sufficiently to eventually get a clear idea of what the author meant?

Chain-translating from one language to the next has never been in the cards.
Formal translations must be made from original texts to be worthwhile.
Moreover, if the author should disagree with any given translation, you
can rest assured that it is flawed. The ultimate reference being what the
author meant.
