I'd like to share some of the experiences I had in trying to switch to Sprint long distance phone service. It's a long story so I will present a short version - trust me, it was a lot worse than it sounds. I have tried for over a month to switch from AT&T to Sprint for my long distance service. Sprint's 5 cents per min. in-state, off-peak rate seemed really attractive. I have not been successful yet. On 3/10/97, I initially called 800-PIN-DROP to place the order. I waited for a month but nothing happened, so I called again early last week. I spoke to a sales person who had no clue on what went wrong with my order, then she assured me that this new order will go through properly. I waited a week and called the sales office again last night. Without looking up my record a saleperson transferred me to customer service, then the customer service person tried to transfer me back to sales for about 15 min. So I hung up the phone, then got a call back from customer service who told me to call back during business hours. At this point I was getting pretty irritated so I called sales back and demanded to speak to a supervisor, who could *not* explain intelligently what happened. So I agreed to call back during business hours and called back this morning. When I called this morning I was put on hold for close to 10min, because all the supervisors were in a staff meeting. Then I got bounced around between sales and verification (BTW, verification did *not* know how to transfer me back to sales). I finally got a hold of a supervisor, and I told her that this was my final attempt so either activate me service today or forget it. She told me 3 to 5 business days but she will try to expedite the order. What really got me ticked off was that there was *no* record of me calling in the second time (last week) in attempt to place the order again! Only thing that showed on their computer was my initial call on 3/10. I would not be surprised if this final attempt does not work, but in a way I should be relieved to stay with AT&T which at least provide decent service. If anybody wants more detail let me know. -Simon, syeo@cs.stanford.edu
