[this is a good discussion, but we should move this out of general]
Sorry, Mr. Kaye, but you may be the one being naive. You don't have
to be well-known to have problems because of this type of garbage.
Several years back, as an undergrad, a hack here managed to break into
several people's accounts, including mine, and sent rude and insulting
messages from them. One guy I knew asked me what was up with the
insults I was sending. I didn't know what he was talking about and
didn't think about a security problem. It wasn't until a couple of
years later that I ran into someone else who told me several people he
knew (whom I didn't know) never really found out about the break-in
but thought I was a jerk because they had gotten ugly messages.
I don't know what other people think, but I consider myself someone
who intends to have a career on these machines, a "computing
professional" if you will. As such, I spend more time on the net than
most of the population (even most tech. professionals), and I expect
my colleagues and associates in my field to do the same.
Consequently, if I want a higher "hit ratio" for topics I want to
discuss with others, I go to net instead of U.S. mail or the
telephone. So, for me, my net.personality is a non-trivial part of my
reputation since it's highly likely many people I have to deal with
are here.
