Contrary to the assertions they make in the book _Suburban Nation_,
engineers are NOT Hellspawn of Satan, and do not design sprawl. If the
engineers had their way, every street in America would be straight and
flat. The gridded street system, with nothing but one-way streets for
better traffic synchronization, would be the only street network[1]
allowed.
Zoning ordinances forcing large lots coupled with developers trying to
maximize house density given the zoning requirements and provide a
constantly-changing view (via curvy streets), produces the stereotypical
cul-de-sac subdivision in Cobb, Gwinnett, or north Fulton.
[1] "Network" is the key word. The cul-de-sac subdivisions of Cobb,
north Fulton, and Gwinnett do not provide for a network. All traffic is
forced onto one subdivision collector road, which empties out onto ONE
main street (e.g., Windy Hill). "Interconnectivity" is a four-letter
word.
