Just adding my 2bits to this thread.....

I've noticed a few posters mention a prowler outside their window
and even breaking in. No one mentions calling the police (although one
person's boyfriend ran out in his boxers with a hammer).

I've lived in Home Park for 2 years now without incident. 
My motion sensitive light has come on several times mostly due
to the neighborhood cats but I keep a loaded camera handy to take 
a snap of any prowler (from the window, I wouldn't dare
confront a stranger in the dark) and deliver it to the police.
GT Police department makes a regular sweep of Home Park.

Home Park may not be Park Avenue, but I feel safe leaving and
returning to my home at all hours of the night. Exercise a little
common sense:

- do not confront a stranger unless you have to
  (I keep a loaded camera handy to snap a mugshot)
- get appliance timers to turn on/off lights
  (I usually leave my TV on when I'm not home at night)
- install motion sensitive lights
  (don't wait for the landlord to do it, costs only $10 at Target)
- get renter's insurance!
- do not keep valuables in your car!
