The following is a sample of a difficulty I've experienced: Script started on Thu Oct 29 13:39:05 1992 bash$ echo $BASH_VERSION 1.12.1 bash$ pwd /share/log A) bash$ echo '\!' A) \! bash$ pwd /share/log B) bash$ echo '!' B) echo 'pwd' B) pwd bash$ exit script done on Thu Oct 29 13:39:33 1992 One of these should work, but the only way to actually get an exclamation point into a string in the shell is to explicitly quote it *only* with a backslash: echo 'hi'\!'bunky' Scott
