Now that I have xboard working, I have been enjoying gnuchess a lot. I like to
play at speed chess speeds, taking back sequences of moves to interesting
positions if I have reached a materially or positionally (whether gnuchess
realizes it or not) lost position. Unfortunately, taking back sequences of
moves does not restore the time remaining for the clock used by gnuchess. So
eventually gnuchess accidently runs into time trouble and can not play at the
same level. Of course it's possible to tell gnuchess exactly how much time to
spend on every move, but I prefer to let gnuchess spend its time in a manner
logical to the program.

Can this problem be solved with reasonable effort? Are other people interested
in a backward/forward feature that accounts for time properly?
