Some of my colleagues have been having crashes in Emacs-18.55 and Emacs-18.57 once or twice a week and I was wondering if there is anything that you can recommend. The funny thing is that most of us *never* have crashes, and those that do always claim not to have been doing anything unusual at the time. For a while, it was only people running a particular program under their shell-mode shell. Is it possible for badly behaved sub-processes to crash Emacs? We've not touched the C source-code at all, are not running out of swap-space (although we do get close) and manage to get crashes equally on all three of our unix platforms (sparc, decstation and rs/6000). I've added quite a lot (7000 lines) of Lisp extensions, including some elaborate filters and mouse-handling stuff, but, presumably, I shouldn't be able to crash Emacs from Lisp. According to the core-dumps, the crashes are happening in `alloc.c'. I admire Emacs greatly and will continue using it (and recommending it!) and so would be very grateful for any advice that you can give me. Dominic Prior (dominic@smallworld.co.uk)
