M-x next-error won't work

I recently moved from ultrix-3.0 to ultrix4.2a. I recompiled
emacs-18.58. Everything works fine except when I do
M-x next-error, it always tells me no more errors. Why it
won't find errors? My suspicion is that the error message
syntax in the new compiler has changed, so emacs could not
match the expression. If that is the case, where should I
look? Does any body have any ideas?

thanks.
