I think I've found the problem. The system was snarfing my .emacs file even though I'd done an su root to do the build and was testing as root. Is it possible that the algorithm for finding the .emacs file is connecting to the wrong place? That is, when su'ed to another user, I sort of expect emacs to look for .emacs in the other user's home. In the case of root, /.emacs instead of ~jgd/.emacs. Anyway, as soon as I moved my .emacs aside the error message went away. But I'd sure like to know how this works. Jerry G.
