Why does gnus-massaged .newsrc confuse other newsreaders?

Whenever I use gnus, then subsequently use trn (when I want to read a
newsgroup that has several hundred articles and don't have twenty
spare minutes to watch them all get threaded), trn complains about my
.newsrc, and spends several minutes doing something, I don't know
what. No other news reader that I have used seems to provoke this.
Anyone have any idea what's happening here?

Also, any insight into what is going on when I try to read a newsgroup
and the threading phase barfs with the message, "symbol's value as
variable is void: THRU"? This only happens with some newsgroups, and
trn seems to have no trouble with them.

This is a KILL file problem. The rn KILL file has an initial
line as follows:

THRU 47394

This tells the KILL file where to start analyzing. When you
enter gnus, it sees the file and tries to analyze it.

Put the following in your .emacs

(setq gnus-kill-file-name "KILL.gnus")

This will keep the rn and gnus KILL files separate and let you
run both.
