SCO UNIX and EMACS Meta key

Has anyone any idea why I am having trouble with the Meta key on
EMACS (latest version) and SCO UNIX 3.2.4.1

Compilation goes fine and EMACS works fine except for the following.
When I first run it I get a "select error - invalid argument". Then
when I use the Meta key e.g. ESC-v to page back through a document
I usually get the same error message. However I don't always get it.
Sometimes the Meta key works.

Any help would be appreciated.
