Hallo,


I am having trouble installing vm-5.32beta.tar.Z which I picked up from
ftp.uu.net:mail.

vm-version.el

        (provide 'vm)

        (defconst vm-version "5.32 (beta)"
        "Version number of VM.")

Emacs Version

    18.55


.emacs

    (autoload 'vm "vm" nil t)
    (autoload 'vm-visit-folder "vm" nil t)

    (setq mail-archive-file-name "~/VM/OUTMAIL" )
    (setq vm-primary-inbox "~/VM/INBOX" )


The original makefile did not create any .elc files so I changed it to
look as follows  

	$(EMACS) -batch  -f batch-byte-compile vm-message.el vm-misc.el
	cat vm-*.elc > vm.elc

This gave the error
  
        Autoloading failed to define funtion vm 

I kept adding .el files until I had the following in my make file

	$(EMACS) -batch  -f batch-byte-compile vm-message.el vm-misc.el 
vm-folder.el vm-vars.el vm-undo.el vm-summary.el
	cat vm-*.elc > vm.elc

and got the following error

     Invalid function: (macro lambda nil (byte-code "\300\207" [(and (bufferp vm-summary-buffer) (null (buffer-name............


I then tried the following in the make file
	$(EMACS) -batch  -f batch-byte-compile vm-*
	cat vm-*.elc > vm.elc

and got the same error as above.


At this point I got stuck. Can anyone help?
