Is there an easy way to painlessly reorder VM folders ? What I'd like would be a way to view a VM-summary and tell "move mail#3 after mail#7". Anybody has written such an extension ? Much thanks for any help. --Philippe -- Philippe SCHNOEBELEN, LIFIA, 46 Av Felix VIALLET, 38000 Grenoble, FRANCE email: phs@lifia.imag.fr "Algebraic symbols are used when you do not know what you are talking about."

Anybody has written such an extension? There is a way to do this, but I can't think of it right now. However, there is a problem with it. The order of the messages are kept in the _header_ of the first (physical) message of your mail box. So, if after _arranging_ your mail messages, you happen to delete the first message...you loose your _re-arranged_ order. --

This shouldn't happen. The header is stuffed into the new first message in the folder, if there is one. There may be a bug that prevents this from happening, though.

I've always liked this feature, but have never gotten it to work. I'm now using VM 5.32(beta) (Epoch 4.2) and whenever I try changing the message order I get an error. The error occurs on saving a folder that has been reordered. Let me be specific. I went to a message and typed M-C-p. It moved up one message. I typed `S' to save the folder and got the following error in the minibuffer: Invalid function: (macro lambda (n) (byte-code "<garbage here>" [n let m (if (< m 0) (-m) m) 3 During previous attempts (using 5.31) I found that a bookmark is created at the top of the folder, and VM had a problem reading it when reopening the folder. I remember it was a parsing error and it said something like "dot in wrong context". So I looked at the top of the folder now (after the above attempt and failure) and found the following in the header: X-VM-Message-Order: (1X-VM-Bookmark: 64 I deleted it and was able to save the file without error. Any ideas? Email would be appreciated. Howard -- **************************************************************************** Howard R. Well, when I use vm-move-message-backward, for example to get a folder in the order I want it, my changes aren't saved (even if I do an 'S' to save the folder). When I revisit the folder, it's in the original order. (vm-version is 5.32 (beta)) -- Mike Northam, Shorter Software Solutions, on contract to Intel Corp. Thanks, I rebuilt VM and everything works now. One small point, I'd like a change of message order (vm-move-message-backward) to mark the folder as modified so that a vm-save-folder will actually save even if nothing else changes. An admitidly quick look at vm-group.el didn't show a variable to set to get this behavior. Is there one? The original broken 5.32 Makefile is to blame no doubt. > During previous attempts (using 5.31) I found that a bookmark is created at > the top of the folder, and VM had a problem reading it when reopening the > folder. This is a new one. If you see it again in 5.32 let me know. In the meantime you need to rebuild VM 5.32 from scratch. Use the following Makefile. # This is a shell archive. Save it in a file, remove anything before # this line, and then unpack it by entering "sh file". Note, it may # create directories; files and directories will be owned by you and # have default permissions. # # This archive contains: # # Makefile # echo x - Makefile sed 's/^X//' >Makefile << 'END-of-Makefile' XEMACS=emacs X XVM: X $(EMACS) -batch -q -l ./vm-message.el -l ./vm-misc.el -f batch-byte-compile *.el X cat vm-*.elc > vm.elc X Xvm: vm.texinfo X $(EMACS) -batch -q vm.texinfo -f texinfo-format-buffer -f save-buffer X Xall: VM vm END-of-Makefile exit
