attaching to the same emacs from multiple processes

Hi.

Does anyone have a version of GNU Emacs running under VMS that has
been modified so that, if you have an emacs running, shell out and
then invoke emacs from the subprocess, you attach to the original
emacs rather than creating a new one?

Our data analysis system uses subprocesses for all kinds of things, and
it's become common to see each person with two or three emacs running
under the same login - these vanish and are recreated as the subprocesses
change. I suspect that we can take a significant load off the system
if we can set up so that you only get one emacs.

If such a beast is available, where can I get it. Unfortunately, I
no longer have the source for our current version of emacs - it had
to be deleted to save space, and was not written on any of our
backups (this happened a long time ago - several years). If necessary,
I can ftp the sources from prep.ai.mit (or whatever) but I'd prefer to
get a VMS BACKUP save set if at all possible (preferably with emacs
built and dumped already to run under VMS 5.4 as the time it would take
to rebuild can really be better spent elsewhere)

Thanks,
John

You want to run EMACS as a 'Kept Editor'. Then C-z out of emacs, not
C-x C-c. Next time you time emacs at the dollar sign, you'll return to
your original emacs session. - Jack

To all those who responded to my question about attaching to an
emacs process from subprocesses...Thanks.

The problem was that we had an OLD (i.e 4 years or so) version of
emacs - which was built before several crucial VMS modifications were
done. That version was capable of suspending (we did know about
kepteditor.com...) but it was only capable of reattaching to the
particular process that spawned it. If you shelled out to a subprocess,
and attempted to attach to emacs, you'd get a new one (and then there'd
be two ;-).

The solution was to install a newer version - which turned out to
be remarkably painless (especially compared to the original
installation where I had to build from source using GCC when the
code was set up to use VMS C - which was decidedly nonstandard at the
time. OWWW!).

Again, I'd like to thank all those who responded - especially
Hal Brand for doing most of the work, and for providing the necessary
files in an extremely convenient form.

Regards,
John
