From what I hear, emacs 19 is supposed to have a better event handler than epoch (mostly due to epoch's experience with X events). If this is the case, then it wouldn't be too hard to write a good window manager with emacs 19. Having tried to fix the broken selection mechanism in a previous release of epoch, I understand compeletely the sentiment of its maintainers for this idea. When I mentioned it to a friend who lothes X, his reply was something along the lines of "At least I could configure the window manager to do the right thing." Window manager functions aren't all that hard to do right. Most of them could even be implemented in LISP code, once you have a dozen or so primitives in place. If you wanted emacs to also map windows, you'd have to be careful of deadlock situations (where the process blocks until the window manager has finished reparenting the window, for example). My friend's other reply was "Cool. Now emacs and my window manager won't be beating each other up for swap space..." Warner P.S. This isn't entirely in jest, nor is it entirely serious :-) -- Warner Losh imp@parcplace.COM ParcPlace Boulder I've almost finished my brute force solution to subtlety.
