I ran our current compiler (Cygnus-2.3.3) against the sources you
enclosed in your message, and I found that it worked for all 3
versions of main.C (main.C, bak2, and bak3). I suggest you forward
this message to your professor and have her (or him) ask the computer
service people to update the compiler you have installed at UCSC.
The version they would upgrade to is GCC 2.3.3. It looks like
you tried it in a Cygnus offshoot version, not the current release.
Do you know whether it works in the current release?
