I had no idea that the bug report was going to
"thousands of people". There was nothing in the
man page that indicated it went any further than
gcc-bug@prep.ai.mit.edu. I now assume this is
  a large mail alias?

If GNU seriously wants to solicit bug reports,
  some better guidelines/information should be
provided in the gcc man page or at least a pointer
  to the information.

This is the man page information I was using:

> BUGS
> Report bugs to bug-gcc@prep.ai.mit.edu. Bugs tend actually to be fixed
> if they can be isolated, so it is in your interest to report them in
> such a way that they can be easily reproduced.

Of the three direct responses I recieved to my bug
report, two (this includes yours) were negative in
nature. I conmpletely support the goals and
accomplishments of the Free Software Foundation, but
all in all, if it had not been for the
positive feedback I got from Jeff Law, I would have
told GNU to "stick their (buggy) compiler where the
  sun don't shine".

You did the right thing in sending the bug report. The purpose of the
but report lists is to convey bug reports to maintainers. Other
people are welcome to read our bug report lists as long as they don't
interfere. Telling you to cater to them when you send bug reports
is interfering. Pay no attention to them!

It seems unfair to judge the FSF according to messages
sent by people who have nothing to do with the FSF.
