GDB and System V 4.0

Hello everybody,

i own a Atari System V Version 4.0 (AT&T) an there is the gcc 1.40 (i know it
is an old one) on it and the gdb is not working (he anounce always:

>> *    Failed assertion `' at line 186 of `elftypes.c'

now my question, ist there anybody out there who has the gdb on a equivalent
System (V 4.0) running? Because Atari said, there are Problems with gdb on ALL
System V 4.0!! As fare as i know, there are differences between bsd and System
V, but i can't believe, that it is impossible to get the gdb running on this
system.
