Need help installing gcc...

I am trying to install gcc under Ultrix 4.2 on a vax.  The configure
command seems to work and the compile proceeds for quite some time, but
then gags and spits out this:

cpp: error /usr/tmp/cca01047.s:1: undefined control
cpp: error /usr/tmp/cca01047.s:37: undefined control
cpp: error /usr/tmp/cca01047.s:39: undefined control
*** Error code 1

I can't find these files where it says they are.  I figured maybe my cpp
was lousing up the works and tried using the one in the gcc directory
without any obvious change.

Anybody got any ideas?  I would greatly appreciate any help.
