working toward g++

Hi,

I'm working toward installing g++ on our Sun3's and Sun4's, and on the
way I've run into a problem with gdb. I'm starting with no gnu code,
so I have to build all of the intermediate packages, too. Rather than
bring our software servers to their knees trying to compile large
packages I'm doing this on a system with a local disk. After all of the
packages are built I'll move the files to the servers.

My questions are at the end of this letter. Here's what I've done so far:

First, instead of putting things in /usr/local I'm putting them in the
local directory /local/pkg/gnu, so I have these directories like

	/local/pkg/gnu/bin
	/local/pkg/gnu/lib
	/local/pkg/gnu/man
        &c.

You get the idea.

I made the following packages:

binutils-1.9
============
	(I correctd  "bindir" in Makefile)
	% make all
	% make install
		==> OK

bison-1.19
==========
	% configure
        (I corrected "prefix" and "exec_prefix" in Makefile)
	% make all
		==> FAILED (I forgot the exact error, but I couldn't
			fix it)

So I tried
bison-1.18
==========
	% configure
        (I corrected "prefix" and "exec_prefix" in Makefile)
	% make all
	% make install
		==> OK

gas-1.38
========
	% make asparc
	% cp asparc /local/pkg/gnu/lib
		==> OK

gcc-1.42
========
	% config.gcc sun4
        (I corrected prefixs in Makefile)
	% make
	% make stage1
	  ...
          (I followed all of the steps described in the INSTALL file, the
           stage1 and stage2 compliers were identical)
	  ...
	% make install
		==> OK

Now I try gdb
gdb-3.5
=======
	% config.gdb
	  ...
	  GDB is now set up for use with a sun4os3.
        This is wroing, it should be set up for sun4os4!
	% config.gdb sun4os4
	  ...
	  GDB is now set up for use with a sun4os4.
	% make
	  cc -I.  -g -Bstatic  -target  -c  main.c
	  cc: Cannot cross-compile for "c"; directory "/usr/arch/sun4/c" doesn't
	  exist.
	  *** Error code 1
	  make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `main.o'
	%

gdb QUESTIONS:
==============
What does this mean? Just where is this magic directory "/usr/arch"
supposed to come from?

g++ QUESTIONS:
=============
I tried to build g++ g++-1.42.0), too but there are problems with the
instructions. According to the README file once gcc is installed there
should be the directories
	gcc-1.42/
	gcc/    linked to ->    gcc-1.42
        gcc-test/

Just where does this gcc-test directory come from? Should this be one
of the stage directories (stage1 or stage2) in gcc-1.42/ ? And, should
the link 'gcc' be made automatically by "make install" during the gcc
build (it wasn't)?

In the Makefile what is GCC_TEST, TDIR?

Thanks for any help.
