on a Silicon graphics (sg3) setting OUTPUTFILE to 'fred' causes:

sg1% ./gs -sDEVICE=paintjet -sOUTPUTFILE=fred chess.ps
Initializing... Unrecoverable error: unknownerror in setdevice
Operand stack:
    --nostringval--
sg1%
