I've installed gs on our HP 9000/700 cluster.   It works very well on
all the HP730 with color monitor.   But for an HP710 with a gray scale
monitor, I run into some problem.  I can view golfer.ps but viewing
other ps files, including chess.ps that come with the distribution and
some .ps generated by dvips, I got only a black screen.   I have tried
to compile without added option, or with either -DSYSV or -DSVR4
since HP UX is derived from System V Unix.  Could this be a bug?  Or
maybe I should try a more recent version?  I am running gs 2.4 on HP
workstations running HP UX 8.07 under VUE window manager.    Please
