  Maybe they are, and maybe they aren't.

  As has been commented several times in this newsgroup, the pedigree
  of some fonts made available for public access is *very* questionable
  and GNU or anybody else should be very cautious.

  I have myself downloaded from a reputable ftp server frequently
  discussed in this group a font which turned out to be a mechanical
  translation of a commercial font which I was able to duplicate
  *exactly* from the commercial original by straight font-type conversion.
  
  As a matter of faith, I also believe in free; but I know that not
  all things are free, and some that seem to be are not really.
