Disk Thrashing!?! HELP!

Can anyone explain why Gnu Smalltalk on my machine seems to swap
constantly ?? Even with very simple programs that are not disk
intensive, Smalltalk seems to access the disk continuously (and
is horribly slow on very simple tasks).

My configuration is:

	Gnu Smalltalk 1.1.1
	NeXTstation w/ 8 MB RAM
	NeXTstep 2.1

Any suggestions would be *greatly* appreciated. At present, the
system is hardly usable.

Thanks,
