gnutar 1.11.1 under Ultrix 4.2

Hello,

I'm wanting to update gnutar from 1.09 to 1.11.1 because I understand that 
1.11.1 fixes the problem that 1.09 has in extracting permissions (-p)
correctly (ie: the group ends up bein -993 not the original group).

However, when I build 1.11.1 and try to use it I get;

can't add file (null):Bad address

Any recommendations, pointers, fixes, etc?
