screen 3.2b loses on RS/6000 AIX 3.1

I have not been able to get screen 3.2b to work on an RS/6000 running
AIX 3.1---it prints the startup banner and exits immediately.  Any
recommendations?  Is there a particular set of configuration options
that will work on this platform?
