Hi all -

First, I realize this is possibly the wrong forum for this question, but
since I've had no response from my post to gnu.misc.discuss, I thought I'd
try here:

Can anyone tell me why some files are replaced by "@@MaNgLeD.?" when I use
gnu tar 1.10 to archive directories?

Here's what "tar -tf /dev/rst0" gave me:

..
menhir/Users/frauendo/Library/GDSSDoc...
menhir/Users/frauendo/Library/GDSSDoc...
@@MaNgLeD.0
@@MaNgLeD.1
@@MaNgLeD.2
@@MaNgLeD.3
menhir/Users/frauendo/Library/GDSSDoc...
menhir/Users/frauendo/Library/GDSSDoc...
..

Many thanks for any help anyone can offer - if I can't solve this, I may
not be able to use gnu tar as my archiver.

-Thomas

This is the right place. Tar is a GNU utility, hence, bug-gnu-utils
is the right list.

Can anyone tell me why some files are replaced by "@@MaNgLeD.?" when I use
gnu tar 1.10 to archive directories?

Names which are too long to fit within the limits of the tar format
get their names changed in this manner. At the end of the tar file is
a special record, however. When extracting, if you let tar complete
(rather than interrupting it part way through), it will read this
special record, and rename the files back to their normal names.

Is this a feature, or should tar catch the relevant signals and assure
that the extracted files have their original names restored?
