gs386 selectdevice problems

We have been merrily using gs386 on a horrible amstrad ibm-compat, printing
stuff on a HPlaserjet3p with no problems. When said amstrad died, we obtained
a not-quite-as-unreliable HP. Transfer all files across, and all works hoopily,
except that now
gs386 -sDEVICE=ljet3 frogs.ps
bombs out with an 'unknown error in setdevice'. The same error occurs if
(ljet3) selectdevice
is used within gs386. Sending text to prn works fine. Help!

Ta muchly,
Christopher Jam & Jeanette Tart.
