That having been said, read the Genesis.  Then go read the current
scientific accounts on the creation of the universe.  You will find that
only the appearance of birds is out of order as long as you take a "day" to
mean a phase.

The story of Methusla is another example.  If you take his age in full moons
rather than years (the Hebrews were nomadic desert dwellers and not highly
developed astronomers), he died at a little over 83 years old.  That would
have made him an incredibly old man in a time when the average lifespan of a
man was less than 40 years.

As for the story of Noah; again symbolism.  About 55 million years ago was a
catastrophic event of global warming where the earth's average temperature
increased by some 14 degrees C in a very short period of time.  This would
have resulted in huge flooding, torrential rains and precipitation, and did
result in the extinction of more than 90% of all species.  From that
remaining 10%, the world's plants and animals have evolved into the
diversity we see today.  And again, think of how someone would attempt to
put such a concept into language a shepherd or a fisherman would understand
some 3000 years ago.

Again, the Bible is not a historical document.  It is an attempt to provide
a guide to what the Greeks called arete; with no direct translation into
English, but loosely means "a good life" or a "quality life".  The Bible was
meant to be (although didn't completely succeed) to be timeless and useable
by an uneducated population.  The danger is when much of it is taken out of
context and used to justify actions that were never intended.  Because it is
so general, it is bound to have contradictions depending on how it is
interpreted.

I am not saying it is correct, but it is genuine, and it is not completely
false.
