What do you think? I personally think swearing indicates that you are weak,
disgraceful and just plain low life! Nothing else has to be said, hasn't
it?

And, someone inserting a long string of swearing just to prove their
immaturity in 3... 2... 1...

However, that said, there's nothing wrong with swearing every once in
awhile. It's a good way to relieve stress without hurting anyone else, and,
after all, they're JUST WORDS.

And an indicator of matunity and character. But on occassion everybody
does it. The trick is not to do it when other folks are within
earshot......

In the same way as when we were growing up. Don't offer any back talk to
your Parents, unless, you're out of earshot <g>. Not like today's kids, who
some (not all) don't seem to see anything wrong with cursing and swearing at
their Parents.

Just because you swear doesn't mean you're any less of a person. I grew up
in a small village where swearing was part of the language. I swear all the
time, plus i'm an engineer so I can't to too stupid. Just becuase you think
swearing is for people who are ''less'' of a person then you are makes you a
bigger idiot then the whole swearing community combined........

I don't really see the big difference, it comes down to old values vs new
values. "Swearing" is just a part of every day language now for most
people, and besides they're just words. And who decided the magic list for
swear words? Big deal if some one says ASS or SHIT.

You know what, I'm making my own swear list. Every time I hear these words
I'll be offended

1. Toaster
2. Snow
3. Chretien(wait, that allready offends me)
4. Turtle

At the risk of being called a snob..I will offer my opinion. I think it is
too bad people choose to swear instead of trying to be more articulate. I
actually enjoy someone who can creatively express themselves in frustrating
or difficult situations without swearing...or anytime.

Swearing is just too easy. I have always taught my children that ...but I
also taught them our family "rules" of swearing. If you feel you must use an
unseemly but timely swear word do not do so in front of Grandma. It's not
worth the backlash. Not in front of the neighbours...or family business
associates. Teachers...try your best not to swear in front of teachers. In
other words, choose with discretion when to spew forth the vial burble.

I find it difficult to follow a conversation with someone who use "fuck"
every second word..."fuck" this.."fuck" that.."for fuck's sake"..what the
hell is that suppose to mean..LOL.

Anyway..just my opinion...now I have "the seven dirty words you can't say on
television" George Carlin comedy routine going through my head...

It's language....and language is often a means of expressing ones self.
Sometimes an explative is desired by the speaker...sometimes is a product
of one's environment.

Personally I can turn it on and off like a faucet. I don't use certain
language when speaking to my parents, but I also don't discuss certain
topics with them either. 'Foul' is a relative term just as beautiful. I
don't care how someone speaks to me. I've heard priests swear...I've heard
CEO's swear...even the Prime Minster...who gives a shit ??

I know I picked up my language mostly from the neighborhood...my parents
have NEVER swore in front of me...not even the word 'shit'. My dad was in
the navy for a decade or two so I'm sure he knows the words...

I had this boyfriend for awhile who would swear in a loud voice over the
littlest things (often in public), and sometimes at the kids. He would
justify doing it by saying it was normal, and that I was being too
sensitive. We were in a treelot and he swore <F@#^> very loudly over
something very small. I ended up leaving him over it. Swearing can be an
insensitive, aggressive expression of anger.

That's only because that's what someone else told you or you learned. Being
offened by language / pictures / whatever is learned. Would you be offened
if someone swore at you in a language you didn't understand ?

I grew up in the north end...very used to colorful language. Language does
not offend me, I know it offends some people and if I don't know my
audience I'll err on the side of caution if it suits me (business dealings
/ girl friend's relatives...etc). When I stub my toe the word 'poop' does
not come to mind !!

It was the way I was brought up...I use very colorful language a lot of the
time...just who I am.

"Language is just that, language." You taking speaking lessons from
George Bush? har har!

I do swear but usually in places where it's deemed more "acceptable"
(like the hockey bench or playing pool with the guys etc) but not in a
public place and especially not around children. They hear enough on
the schoolyard, they don't need to hear it everywhere else.

Yes cursing is just words but they are words deemed by society to be
coarse and offensive. Unfortunately some people think they can use
them anywhere they like which to me is rude. It shows they don't have
respect for others who might be offended by it and also that they
don't have any respect for themselves. When I hear adults cursing in
the grocery store or in front of their kids, I do think less of them
and wonder how low their IQ is.

If cursing is just words, how about using some other socially
acceptable words like..frig or darn..or fiddlesticks!? haha! Afterall
if it's just a word it shouldn't matter what you use, right?

Gman you should start up the "I Want To Be Able To Curse Anywhere
Anytime AND Sunday Shop Organization" or IWTBATCAAASSO for short. Lol!

They are just words, and not only that, they are words that date back
several hundred years. It's not like it's a new thing. Fuck goes back
further than the 1700's. Shit is even older.
Every word in the English language is there because it expresses a
thought or emotion. And yes there are a dozen words for each thought and
some are better than others.
All I can think of when someone hits their thumb with a hammer and says
nothing more than "damn", is how repressed they are (and wonder how
repressed they are in other aspects of their life).
Religion, society and culture has tried to make us all Puritans over the
last 100 years. Fuck that. I want to express my self, be free and yes even
fu*ck like a beast.

In my humble opinion, this comment comes from an individual who
has lived a pretty sheltered life, full of restrictions and controls. If you
fell like that, you have a right to express your opinions BUT don't think
for one second that your going to get an over abundance of support. Language
that is spoken on occasion does NOT reflect the social standing or the
education of the speaker / writer but rather the frustration of dealing with
individuals that will only respond to certain stimulations, ( swearing at
them is better then "kicking" them in he butt) to get their attention.
Remember, what is rude today, will be the social norm tomorrow!

gman, it is somewhat difficult to explain. Yes culture is a learned thing,
but in my culture it is rude to yell at your family members and to act
aggresively in public. This is similar for most cultures, you will find.
Language, even though learned, is all about communication, trying to connect
to another person, conveying thoughts and emotions, and most cultures have
different forms of niceties that surround language. These niceties are there
to protect people from becoming offended and to deepen relations between
them. Swearing, in our culture, at loved ones, and strangers then, would in
the very least be an extremely ineffective way of communicating. And if,
culturally, as I was, someone was raised to do this in a jovial fashion so
that friggin' meant very, or whatever, then that would be quite different
from someone using it to express anger.

On the contrary, swearing at someone may be a way to get one's
attention...to convey shock, dissappointment....any number of different
emotions. It is definitely cultural based...different words mean very
different things even between provinces within Canada.

Personally, I'm not offened by language. There are far more offensive words
in the english language than fuck or shit...how about nigger or wop ?? I
find these words far more offensive....and I'm white, anglo-saxon...

So besides the GF's relatives, business clients also don't consider
them "just words"?

I have no idea how they view anything, but when I'm speaking to a client
I'm not speaking for myself, I'm representing my company. My company wants
me to act a certain way....as far as I'm concerned it's their dime so I'll
honor their wishes.

the @#$! if I @#$!king know why people @#$!ing well swear....

Seriously though, I find it offensive at times.. You're out with your
family at a store or a restaurant, or any other public place, and you hear
people cussing out loud about stuff.. irks me greatly. Would love to tell
these people off, but what's the point. I personally cuss up a storm
talking to my buddies who also cuss.. but I have the courtesy to restrict
it to the privacy of my own car, apartment, etc.. And never around people
who find it offensive. And not in front of the kids. I mean, have some
respect for others, you know?

I think it's silly how some people will get upset over one word and not
another.
For example, take my father-in-law, church going Catholic guy, who says
Goddam this and Goddam that, and by Jesus something else, even in front of
his grandkids.. But so help anyone that uses the "F" word in front of him!
Or any other colorful language. Oh so very hypocritical. I think he needs
to listen to some George Carlin... heheheheh

Agree, as those words are meant to show disrespect to a person or group
based solely on the color of the skin, or the accent..
If you want to try what words are worse.. walk through the "Square" and
yell the "N" word, and then the "F" word, and see which draws you the most
attention... *wink*. Words are forms of expression, and unless they are
meant to "hurt" by degrading ones sex, nationality or language, they are
mere seconds in a life time, ignore them if you don't like what you hear...
